Founded by Anthony Volodkin in 2005, The Hype Machine is a website designed to compile a variety of popular music, both new and old, into one streamlined website. In doing so it allows users to listen and discover new songs and artists easily. The Hype Machine accomplishes this by taking music being blogged about by thousands of approved MP3 music bloggers and sharing the music they discuss. The Hypem staff handpicks these blogs and the music on them is then posted on the Hype Machine page and made available for the public. Recently, the site has partnered with Soundcloud to allow the website to share new and pre-released songs without releasing MP3 files to the public for consumption. This has improved the user interface on the Hype Machine and also allows artists and record companies access to analytic software to see who is listening to specific songs and artists, and how they are interacting with it. Users can interact with this music in various ways. Though creating an account in not required to listen to the music on the website, if you do it allows you to “love” songs and save them to your profile playlist. It also allows you to see the music which your friends have listened to and/or “love.” The site also allows you to sort music based upon pre-determined listings such as Latest, Popular, Zeitgeist (50 most popular songs and artists of the year), among others. Users cannot download music directly from the website, instead they are encouraged to purchase the music through sites such as iTunes, or Amazon.com to help support the artists, while the Hype Machine also takes a small commission from these purchases.
